Comic Relief: Funding Opportunity for Care Home Providers

Scottish Care members may be interested in the following opportunity from Comic Relief:  https://www.comicrelief.com/grants/initiatives/care-home-challenge-fund-round-two

There will be 20 grants of between £10,000-£20,000 to care home providers from across the UK. The deadline for applications is midday on 4th August 2017 and applications must be made via the  online system accessible through www.comicrelief.com

Grants will last for between 18-24 months, including time for planning, partnership building and delivery. It is envisaged that each grant will reach a maximum of 4-5 care homes, focusing on quality of delivery led by residents and care home staff rather than volume of people.

Based on learning from Round One, Comic Relief will prioritise applications which:
• Involve residents and staff taking part in meaningful activities together, and protect staff members’ time to ensure their full participation
• Partner with a third-party activity provider which has a good understanding of the care home context and residents’ needs
• Are ‘person-centred’, planning the work in response to residents’ needs and interests, involving residents in co-designing activities, and respecting people’s choice to participate.
• Demonstrate a clear commitment to the proposed activity from the care homes involved, particularly from the managers and activity coordinators.
• Support staff to build skills and confidence so they can facilitate or deliver activities, enabling sustainability beyond the life of the project.
• Show how they are building on the findings from Round One.

Training opportunities: Terrence Higgins Trust

The Terrence Higgins Trust have asked us to circulate the below details on training courses they are running this summer, which may be of interest to members.

HIV diagnoses among the 50+ have almost doubled in the last decade and diagnoses of sexually transmitted infections among those 65 and older have increased by 38%. Older people now represent one in three of all people living with HIV, but the social care and healthcare systems aren’t ready for this new and fast-growing ageing generation.  Moreover, despite many advancements in HIV treatment and prevention, stigma and discrimination remains a critical challenge.

As the new report,  Uncharted Territory [PDF] concluded, “our health and social care systems are simply not ready for this and we could see a timebomb in the years to come. We must ensure our care homes and our communities are ready to support people with HIV to live well in later life, while facing the uncertainty of what lies ahead.”

To help address this challenge, the Learning Centre at Terrence Higgins Trust Scotland is offering specialised, accredited training.  All training courses will help workers to support people with HIV more effectively, recognise and mitigate risks, challenge stigma & discrimination, understand the legislation on HIV disclosure and confidentiality, and respond to the sexual health needs of residents, clients or patients.

Please see below for some examples of training currently on offer. With any questions, please contact  [email protected] or call 0141 332 3838. You can join our mailing list if you wish to be kept up-to-date with opportunities as they emerge.

Scottish Care comments on the Scottish Parliament Report on Gender Pay Gap

Having taken evidence since March this year, the Economy, Jobs and Fair Work Committee at the Scottish Parliament has now published its report on the Gender Pay Gap, ‘No Small Change: The Economic Impact of Closing the Gender Pay Gap.”

Scottish Care was asked to contribute evidence to MSPs sitting on the Holyrood Committee and did so earlier this year.

To view the report, please visit the Scottish Parliament’s website

It is expected that the Scottish Government will provide a response to this report by the end of the summer.

Following the publication of the Report Scottish Care’s CEO, Dr Donald Macaskill commented:

“Having highlighted to the Committee the issue of gender segregation within the care sector we are particularly pleased to see their report calling for priority to be given to the care sector in Scotland. Scotland’s paid carers play a major part in the Scottish economy and their particular needs require to be recognised and prioritised. We commend the report in its analysis of the role that the social care workforce make to the wider economy and call upon Ministers to respond positively to their call for increased reward and recognition of this workforce. Tackling the gender pay gap in Scotland means tackling the issue of a poorly recognised and valued, female dominated care workforce.”

Development opportunity for level 5 Registered Nurses

RCN Scotland has designed a substantive Developing Leadership Programme, delivered across the UK and approved by the ILM, to help registered nurses to be effective role models and bring about positive changes, whilst promoting a team approach that is inclusive, vibrant and supported by continuous learning.

Following a successful pilot last year, the organisation is offering further dates for this two-day programme at their Edinburgh headquarters on Wednesday 25 October and Tuesday 7 November 2017.  The two days are separated by two weeks to encourage reflection during the programme.

The programme has been developed for registered nurses at Level 5, or equivalent, and is suited for the NHS, independent, voluntary and third sector organisations. This is ideal for organisations who wish to invest in a group of inspiring leaders.

To find out more about the programme visit https://www.rcn.org.uk/professional-development/professional-services/leadership-programmes/developing-leadership-programme, email [email protected] or phone 0207 647 3485.  Please follow this link to access the interactive application form.
