Climate change is no longer a distant concern for social care. It is already shaping the realities of care delivery – from heatwaves and flooding to power outages and rising energy costs.
Care that cares for people and planet means recognising these pressures and responding in ways that protect rights, wellbeing and continuity of care, while reducing environmental impact and strengthening long‑term sustainability.
Partnership working for a more sustainable care sector
As part of Day 3 of the Care Creates campaign, we are sharing a short message from our energy partner, Focus Energy Services, on how partnership working can support care providers to better understand and manage energy use.
With energy prices volatile and climate pressures increasing, understanding consumption patterns, peak demand and available options can help providers:
- Reduce costs and environmental impact
- Build more resilient services
- Support a greener care sector in Scotland
Protecting people through climate‑resilient care
Caring for the planet must always go hand in hand with caring for people.
We are also sharing practical guidance from Adaptation Scotland, funded by the Scottish Government and Verture, on building climate‑resilient social care. This resource supports practitioners and providers to embed climate risks into care planning and delivery – helping to protect people who rely on care, support carers, and maintain continuity during extreme weather and climate disruption.
The guidance covers:
- Heat, flooding, storms and cold weather risks
- Protecting health, safety and human rights
- Supporting carers and maintaining access to care
- Practical actions that can be built into care plans
Care creates resilience
Care that cares for people and planet is about more than carbon reduction. It is about safeguarding dignity, wellbeing and support – today and into the future.
By working in partnership and sharing practical learning, social care helps create resilient communities and a fairer, more sustainable Scotland.
