Care Creates: Care that Cares for People and the Planet Stories

Stories of sustainability, wellbeing and connection across Scotland’s care services.

Across Scotland, social care support is playing a vital role in responding to the climate challenge –  not through abstract targets, but through everyday actions that protect wellbeing, strengthen communities and nurture our relationship with the natural world.

Care that cares for people and the planet recognises that human wellbeing and environmental wellbeing are deeply connected. Access to green spaces, creativity rooted in place, sustainable design, reuse of materials and inclusive outdoor experiences all help people live fuller, healthier lives – while reducing waste and caring for our shared environment.

These four stories show what climateconscious care looks like in practice. From recycled gardens to accessible outdoor adventures, from creativity inspired by local landscapes to sustainable spaces that spark joy, each example reflects care that creates a healthier future for people and planet alike.

Care Creates… playful, inclusive environments shaped by community and creativity

BCG Rumbling Bridge – A Sustainable Sensory Space

At BCG Rumbling Bridge Nursing Home, staff and residents codesigned a fullsize portable ball pool to boost sensory stimulation, social connection and emotional wellbeing. Built collaboratively – and sparking weeks of excitement – the pool offers an accessible, therapeutic space that supports relaxation for people with restricted mobility. By using creativity through collective effort, the project demonstrates how care settings can design joyful, sustainable experiences that improve wellbeing for everyone.

Leuchie House: Opening the Outdoors

Leuchie House offers guests the use of a Trekinetic allterrain wheelchair, designed with advanced engineering to provide safe, smooth access to beaches, fields and woodland trails. The chair enables guests to explore outdoor places that might otherwise feel inaccessible, supporting physical freedom and deepening connection to the natural world. By removing barriers and encouraging time in green spaces, the service shows how care can foster both personal wellbeing and a stronger relationship with the environment.

Care Creates…greener spaces that nurture people and the planet

BCG Coupar Angus – Gardening with Purpose

As part of the BCG in Bloom competition, BCG Coupar Angus transformed recycled wooden pallets into an innovative planter for their sensory garden. This simple act of reuse supports sustainability while inviting residents to engage with nature, scent, texture and seasonal growth. The planter has become a standout feature, reflecting how climateconscious care can emerge from everyday creativity – enriching wellbeing while reducing waste and helping gardens thrive.

Care Creates… stories that last

At Leven Beach Care Home, a creative project turned into a lasting legacy.

To celebrate Father’s Day, Meallmore launched a special whisky label competition inviting residents to design artwork for a limited-edition bottle shared across the group’s homes.

The winning design came from 91-year-old resident John Picken, whose painting “Leven Sunrise” captured the view over the Leven promenade.

John’s artwork was transformed into the label for the whisky bottles enjoyed by residents and families across Scotland.

For John and the Leven Beach community, the project became about much more than whisky. It sparked creativity, conversation and connection – reminding everyone that creativity and identity do not fade with age.

Today John’s painting is displayed proudly in the home, continuing to inspire residents and colleagues.
