With Professor Anne Basting, Theatre Artist and Educator; Professor of Theatre, Peck School of the Arts, University of Wisconsin / Milwaukee; 2016 MacArthur Fellow

Anne Basting is a theatre artist and educator, known internationally for her groundbreaking creative practice which engages older people in care settings and their wider communities.  Her work demonstrates the potential of storytelling and creative expression to improve the lives of older people living with cognitive impairment.  Basting has developed an alternative concept of ageing, one that focuses on its possibilities as well as its challenges, and views sustained emotional connections as critical to our wellbeing as we age

Her lecture will focus on the positive impact of community-building projects with older people as collaborators, including The Penelope Project, a collaboration between UWM Department of Theatre and Luther Manor Senior Living Community; The Islands of Milwaukee programme which aimed to create a sustainable network to bring meaningful engagement to older adults who are at risk of isolation; and a new creative training programme being launched in 2016 with 50 Wisconsin nursing homes.
