Scottish Government announce £1 million for voluntary sector care worker training

The Scottish Government has announced (5 April 2017) the allocation of £1 million to voluntary sector care at home and housing support services to support staff to meet qualification requirements.

The fund is intended to aid voluntary organisations, particularly small-medium sized organisations, to ensure that staff meet the registration requirements set by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC). The funding can be used directly to fund or support new training and development needs associated with meeting the requirements for registration with the SSSC.

The Voluntary Sector Development Fund money is being allocated to 79 charities which provide care at home and housing support services.

In light of the announcement, Dr Donald Macaskill said:

“We welcome this announcement by the Scottish Government to support the development of a qualified, registered social care workforce.  We look forward to further discussions with the Scottish Government and other partners around how to ensure this critical workforce are trained, supported and valued appropriately.  However, we are concerned about the nature of this funding allocation in that it is only accessible to the voluntary sector.  In keeping with the principles of health and social care integration, we believe there should not be unhelpful segregations of the social care sector but that the contribution of every worker should be valued equally, regardless of employer.”

Learning and Development Needs for Technology Enabled Care: Survey

NHS Education for Scotland is conducting a short survey to establish learning and development opportunities to make the national Technology Enabled Care Programme an integral part of health and care delivery.

The Technology Enabled Care Programme aims to support digital transformation of health, care and support services by using technology as an integral part of high quality, cost effective care and support.

Who should complete this survey?

We want to understand the learning and development needs, even if you don’t work with technology enabled care. We welcome the views of all staff in health, social care, housing and support services. And we would like to hear from as many people as possible – whether you are support workers, practitioners, administrators or managers. So please forward this e-mail widely to your colleagues.

The survey will close on Monday 24 April 2017.

Please click here to start.

Thank you for your participation in this important survey and if you have any questions please contact:

How do you explain dementia to a six year old?

Displaying ally_bally_bee_project.jpg

The Ally Bally Bee Project is the world’s first personalised children’s book about dementia.

We launched a 2-minute fundraising video three weeks ago and reached our target within three days. During that time we also featured in The Sunday post (online and print), STV news and Third Force News.

As you will see from our video and press coverage, this is very much a family project but one with worldwide appeal. It’s all in aid of a good cause: to educate children about dementia and raise money for charities across the globe.

So far, we have attracted two gold corporate sponsors – one from the US and one from Australia. These organisations will now benefit from having their names and logos feature in every book we publish, on our website and across all our communications.

We would love to have a third, UK, sponsor on board. We truly think this is an amazing opportunity and, although we’ve achieved so much as a family, with your support we could do so much more.

A few other highlight of our project include:

  • More than 16,000 Twitter followers, 550 email sign ups and almost 4,000 Instragram followers
  • Award winning presentation at the Alzheimer Europe Conference in Copenhagen 2016
  • Abstract for the Alzheimer’s Disease International conference in Japan 2017 accepted for presentation

Please watch our video and find out how you can get involved. We would love for you to be involved in this truly unique and innovative project.

Together, we can make those difficult conversations a little easier.

Thank you,

Nina, Matthew and wee Lana

Social Security Experience Panels

At least 2,000 people with direct personal experience of the current social security system are being recruited to help shape Scotland’s new system.

The panels will offer an opportunity to those with direct, personal experience of the benefit system to get involved and help shape the future of social security in Scotland. One of the key principles is that social security in Scotland will be designed with the people of Scotland, and these panels are one way of turning that principle into a reality.

Registration is now live and people can do so online and by post, while a phone-line will also be available for those who do not have online access or need additional support.

The panels will work closely with the Expert Advisory Group on Disability and Carers’ Benefits, chaired by Dr Jim McCormick, associate director for Scotland with the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

Complete the registration form online or print out the registration form and return it by post.

Return your form to:

Freepost SOCIAL SECURITY EXPERIENCE PANELS. (No stamp required)

If you need additional support to register, you can call on Freephone 0800 029 4974 and you will receive help to complete it over the phone.

Registration will close on 12 May 2017.

Supervisors in adult care: tell us about your experiences at work

The SSSC has recently contacted registered supervisors in care at home services, housing support services and care home services for adults to announce a proposed change in the additional supervisory qualification that supervisors need for SSSC registration.

To ensure the SSSC get this right they need to hear directly from supervisors about their experiences and wish to understand the managerial and supervisory aspects of their role so they can work with others to offer the most effective support.

To start this process they would like supervisors to take part in one of six half day workshops in March, or one of a small number of telephone discussions.

Although this invitation is only for supervisors in the adult services listed above, there will be a wider online survey in March in relation to both the supervisory and management requirements in adult services.  (They are not considering any changes to the practice requirements for supervisors or managers in adult services at this time).  Anybody with an interest in supervisory or management qualification requirements will be invited to participate in this.

If you are a supervisor and would be interested in coming to an inquiry group or taking part in a short telephone discussion to share your views, please complete your details in this short form and the SSSC will get back in touch.

Leadership for Health and Social Care Integration – Free Workshops

Readiness for Collaboration

How can I work better with my health and social care colleagues?

Integrating services across health and social care needs us all to collaborate effectively, but this can be a messy business! Our enthusiasm for progressing change is often accompanied by frustration about the difficulties of doing this.

Why is it so hard to collaborate effectively? Service transformation is about more than structure and process reorganisation. Differences in culture, approaches, roles, expectations, agendas, politics (and the rest) all make up the messiness of collaboration.

No one person or organisation has the answer, but we know that effective teams have the same things in common: trust and respect built up from developing relationships and connections. Where everyone feels safe and valued, and everyone’s voice is heard, they are much more open, ready and resilient in the face of change.

Leadership for Integration is offering free workshops on resilience and readiness for collaboration.  These are open to anyone who works in health and social care integration to improve outcomes for people who use their services.

The workshops will support you to:

–          recognise the factors that can affect your collaborative relationships

–          improve the conversations you have with your colleagues

–          use your sources of resilience to survive and thrive!

There are 40 places in each workshop, allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Click on your preferred location and date below to reserve your free place now.

Apply now to become one of Scotland’s next Dementia Champions

Would you like to take part in a free five-day programme delivered at the enhanced dementia practice level?

The SSSC programme is open to people working in either health or social services. Social service applicants must be supported by their employer and will need to demonstrate an ability to inspire and effect positive change.

The course will be delivered by the University of the West of Scotland and Alzheimer Scotland in five locations across Scotland between April and August 2017.

What is a Dementia Champion?

Within their existing roles and through a diverse range of activities Dementia Champions seek to improve the complete care and support experience for people with dementia, their families and carers; primarily in acute general hospital settings, but also in the community. There are currently over 80 Dementia Champions active in social service roles in Scotland, including social work, day care, care at home, care home and housing support across public, independent and third sector organisations. Social service Dementia Champions work alongside over 500 Dementia Champions working in health services.

Apply now

SSSC have distributed application packs widely, however if you have not received this through your organisation you can ask for an application pack and more information by emailing: [email protected]
