75th Anniversary Victory in Europe (VE) Day Commemorations

The 8th May 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, the end of the Second World War in Europe.

In commemorating this anniversary, it has been the Scottish Government’s aim to help the people of Scotland recognise that the relative freedoms and liberties which they now take for granted, despite our current circumstances, are due to the many personal sacrifices of our Second World War generation.

As such we have been working in partnership with Legion Scotland and Poppyscotland, and in collaboration with the other Governments across the UK, to mark this historic day.

We would like to take this opportunity to share VE Day themed activity resources with you. These include 1940s recipes, dance steps and music playlists, all of which have been created by Poppyscotland and English Heritage.

These virtual resources, along with a programme of virtual content to be hosted online by Legion Scotland throughout the day, have been made to ensure we are all still able to mark the end of the Second World War in Europe across the nation, whilst still adhering to current physical distancing restrictions in place due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

These resources can be found at the following links –

Disclosure Scotland update – 7 May

Please see below for an update on disclosure fees from Disclosure Scotland.

The suspension of disclosure fees for key workers and volunteers is being extended.

It remains a temporary measure and is solely for those who are being drafted in to help Scotland fight against coronavirus. The suspension, which will now be in place until June 12, will be reviewed again and extended further, if needed.

As we continue to only process applications for workers deemed critical at this moment in time, the list of prioritised roles is now:
  • healthcare
  • pharmaceutical
  • childcare
  • social work
  • social care
  • prisons and justice
  • early years, primary and secondary education
Following Scottish Government guidance, roles supporting the sectors mentioned above are also considered a priority. For example, cleaners and catering staff in schools and hospitals as well as those providing transport etc.

With the situation developing and evolving, the list of prioritised sectors will continue to be reviewed and may change as Disclosure Scotland identifies others with roles critical to supporting the Scottish Government at this time.

We have also revised our application forms to make applying easier.
Please ensure you download the latest version: www.mygov.scot/coronavirus-disclosure/

If submitting more than 50 applications simultaneously, please give us advance notice by emailing[email protected] – please also continue to send all completed applications as well as any queries to this address.

Thank you for your continued patience during this critical time,

Gerard Hart
Chief Executive

Local community offers support to Dryfemount Care Home during Covid-19

We have always valued, maintained and nurtured our links to the local community, however it is in times like these that we are left truly humbled and elated by the words of encouragement and support we have received since the pandemic begun.

This was valued more recently, when we were facing a true crisis that left the team feeling very low in morale and devastated, by the pandemic. The unexpected kindness and gifts by local groups and businesses as well as families and friends of Dryfemount have given the team a much needed boost and put smiles on their faces.

Early on, Jane Power and a large number of individuals within our community immediately responded when Dryfemount posted an appeal for DVD Players and DVDs to distract residents attention away from the news and constant negativity of the pandemic. We were overwhelmed by the response,  with DVD Players, DVDs and even some TVs being delivered to the home.

Arla Creamery in Lockerbie delivered  Easer Eggs to all residents and staff, TK Max delivered many goodies and gifts, the Young Farmers brightened out surroundings with a donation of plants and kindly offered assistance of planting them.

Needlework of Lockerbie Cluster Group and NHSD&G for the Love of Scrubs also contributed wash bags. Many of our residents family members have dropped of little things to lift spirits within the Care Home and shown their support as well as messages of support, reinforcing and  reminding the staff they are doing a great job, playing an important role in ensuring the wellbeing of the individuals in our care.

I have seen many other homes being given that same kindness, support and encouragement.

It is in times like these that we truly see how bright our communities shine, providing that much needed ray of hope and happiness that encourages many to keep on going no matter how bleak it may seem at this time.  We all must continue to support each other and lend strength where it is needed.

International Nurses Week 2020 Stories

International Nurses Week (6-12 May) commences today

Today (6 May) sees the start of International Nurses Week, this celebration week will run until Tuesday 12 May, which marks International Nurses Day.

This year’s theme is compassion and throughout this week, Scottish Care are collating and sharing stories from care homes and individuals. You can read the stories or videos we have shared so far here.

It is important to share these positive stories to recognise all the work nurses and care home staff do, especially during these difficult times.

On Tuesday 12 May, to mark International Nurses Day, we are encouraging care homes to take part in a “Take a T break” – with the T standing for thank you. This is a chance to say thank you for our dedicated nurses, carers and teams for all the work they do and for stepping up to the challenges of Covid-19.

If you want to get involved, please share your compassionate stories through social media using the hashtag #carenursescot. If this is not possible, you can email your stories to [email protected].

To start of this week,  Jacqui Neil, our Transforming Workforce Lead for Nursing has recorded a video message.
