Collisdene Residents Set Sail

Collisdene Residents Set Sail for a Day of Tranquil Canal Adventure

In a day filled with excitement and picturesque scenery, the residents of Collisdene Care Centre took to the waters under the guidance of a skilled skipper for a delightful canal journey, organised by Collisdene’s very own Activity Coordinator, Rosie Brennan.

The Seagull Trust at Kirkintilloch played host to this extraordinary day of sailing, where residents basked in the sunshine, perched on the deck, enjoying a cuppa, and exchanging friendly waves with passers-by. As they meandered along the tranquil canals, their hitlist included sightings of herons, swans, ducks, and the vibrant water lilies – and the canal delivered them all in abundance.

It was an idyllic day, offering a perfect escape for relaxation and the simple joy of basking in the warm sun. Every resident cherished this wonderful day, made even more special by the incredible crew from the Seagull Trust at Kirkintilloch. Their warm welcome and unwavering support made the canal voyage a memorable experience.

A heartfelt thank you goes out from each and every one at Collisdene to the fantastic team at the Seagull Trust for making this day an unforgettable adventure on the water.

Social Care Emergency: Seeking future designers – 1 November 2023

Social Care Emergency: Seeking future designers

Please join the RSA and Scottish Care for this exciting event in Glasgow

The RSA and Scottish Care invite you to collaborate on designing a better tomorrow.

In 2018 Scottish Care worked with the European school of innovation and design at Glasgow School of Art to explore the future of social care. The methodology incorporated Megatrends cards developed by Finish sustainable future organization Sitra and led to the creation of revolutionary new roles in social care such as the Care Technologist. More information on the first phase of this programme in 2018 can be found here.

Taking a future-orientated and ‘pop-up design’ approach (Teal and French 2016) Scottish Care hopes to engage participants in an informal space, enabling creative conversations about the potential of the future based upon the fundamental question “What If?”. This will result in outcomes based upon an understanding of what objects, technologies and ideas will be important and which actors will make up social care and support, shaping the direction for how it will look and feel in 25 years.

People will have grown up in different technological, economic, and social climates, with different family structures, friendships, and relationships. People will hold different opinions on what it means to ’live well’ These differences are very important to consider and may result in multiple futures to map in answer to the question ‘What next?’.

It’s now 2023 and a shifting global landscape has led to a social care emergency, but we are not defeated. Sitra has released an updated set of Megatrends offering us the opportunity to revisit this design methodology in search of a better tomorrow.

We invite you to join us in a human-led design process for all our futures.

We want this work to have legacy in the way that the 2018 version did, to change how and what care and support we access as we age. This time we want to go wider and see tying in with the RSA Design for Life three focus areas as a real opportunity to do this. Building capabilities: we will work from an active citizenship model, bringing together people from beyond the traditional boundaries of the health and social care system because futures thinking that enables us to live healthy lives for longer affects every one of us. Growing hubs: we will build knowledge networks of imagination in the social care space to enable design-led thinking with legacy by enabling space for creative conversations. Developing Infrastructure: we will work in the open, hosting the tools for design and the outputs from the work on our website. We will consider and make recommendations for addressing the implementation gap aiming to create the conditions for lasting and regenerative change. You can find out more about the RSA’s Design for Life mission here.

Queen’s Nurse Programme 2024

Social care providers in Scotland who employ registered nurses are invited to nominate a member of staff for a nine-month transformational leadership programme.

The Queen’s Nursing Institute Scotland (QNIS) is a charity which supports, develops, and inspires Scotland’s community nurses and midwives to be agents for health improvement and catalysts for social change.

The Queen’s Nurse Development Programme provides an opportunity to develop the skills of those who are committed to making a difference in their communities, particularly to the lives of those who live in areas of deprivation or are marginalised by society. The programme is a journey of discovery, giving candidates the time and space to discover their skills as facilitators of improvement.  This year they are prioritising places for nurses working in social care.

The programme is fully funded but it requires employers to release staff for ten days between March and November 2024. Candidates attend a residential workshop in March 2024 with two further follow up workshops in June and October. Candidates are supported by one-to-one coaching throughout the programme where they work on an issue for development agreed by their employer.

QNIS are particularly keen to offer places to those who are currently underrepresented in the Queen’s Nurse community:

  • People of the global majority
  • Nurses who are internationally educated
  • Young nurse leaders (under 35)
  • Men in social care nursing

Candidates need to be nominated by the organisation’s Chief Executive or equivalent. This can be done by sending their name, email address and job title to [email protected] by noon on 4th of October 2023. Once they have been nominated, the closing date for candidate applications is midday Wednesday 15th November 2023.

Celebrating Achievements at Collisdene Care Centre

We are thrilled to share some exciting news from Collisdene Care Centre, where remarkable achievements have been taking place under the guidance of international champion Stephanie Mackenzie.

Stephanie, who secured an impressive 3rd place in the World Championships in 2017, is not only the National Coach for Tae Kwon-Do but also the Taekwondo coach at Collisdene Care Centre. Her dedication and expertise have made a significant impact on the lives of their residents.

Behind the scenes, Rosie Brennan, the Activity Coordinator at Collisdene, deserves special recognition for her vision and tireless efforts. Rosie was the driving force behind bringing Taekwondo to residents, recognising the physical and mental benefits it could offer. Her commitment to enriching the lives of our residents is truly commendable.

Stephanie will be jetting off to Finland to coach the National Squad for the 2023 Tae Kwon-Do Championship. Her commitment to the sport is truly commendable.

A memorable moment occurred on August 22nd, 2023, as 10 residents and one staff member achieved their goal and received their yellow belts, proudly presented by Stephanie herself. Joining in on the celebration were Provost Margaret Cooper, MP Dr. Lisa Cameron, and Abigail and Reece Stirling, both accomplished black belts who work closely with Stephanie and are set to compete in the Taekwondo championships in Finland.

The presentation ceremony, held at Collisdene Care Centre, brought tears of joy to families and staff members as they cheered on the residents during the board-breaking portion of their grading. Both the Provost and MP enthusiastically participated, earning the admiration of everyone present.

The spirit of celebration doesn’t stop here; MP Dr. Lisa Cameron is taking these accomplishments to Parliament with a motion to recognise the fantastic work being done at Collisdene. Everyone is so excited to share their achievements on a national platform.

In June 2023, six residents achieved their SQA Level 2 in Modern Languages – French, a fantastic feat made possible with the support of Lingo Flamingo’s Judith and Rosi. The entire Collisdene community is bursting with pride over these accomplishments.

Collisdene residents are truly fortunate to have such dedicated and talented individuals like Stephanie Mackenzie, Abigail, Reece Stirling, Judith, and Rosi, who are helping them reach their full potential and achieve remarkable goals. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Rosie Brennan for her unwavering dedication and vision in bringing these opportunities to Collisdene’s residents.
