Professor Donald Macaskill

Chief Executive

Senior Leadership

I am the Chief Executive of Scottish Care. My background is in social care, human rights, and community development, and over many years I have worked across the voluntary and independent sectors advocating for the rights, dignity, and wellbeing of people who draw on care and support, especially older adults.

In my current role, I lead Scottish Care’s national work around policy, research, and public engagement, working closely with members, government, and partners to influence the future direction of social care. A significant part of my role involves speaking, writing, and engaging in public debate, ensuring that the voices and experiences of those who live, work, and receive care are heard and valued. I also work with other stakeholders to improve the experience of palliative care and in particular bereavement support across the counry.

What drives me most is a deep commitment to human rights, ethical practice, and the creation of a social care system that enables people not just to live, but to flourish. I am particularly interested in how innovation, including digital and AI developments, can enhance care while remaining rooted in compassion, relationships, and autonomy.

I believe profoundly in the power of storytelling, collaboration, and compassion to shape a better future for social care in Scotland and beyond.
