Care Creates: Rights at the Heart of Care Quotes

Real stories showing how rights, dignity and independence come to life in social care

This Human Rights Week gives us space to reflect on what social care truly creates – not only safety and support, but independence, dignity, joy, and moments that help people reclaim and rebuild their lives.

Across Scotland, care workers, services, families and communities are living the principles of human rights every day. Social care, as our campaign reminds us, is essential public infrastructure – a foundation that helps people live well, participate, stay connected and thrive.

This week, we are sharing four powerful stories from across our sector. Told by managers, families and loved ones, they show how rights‑based, relationship‑centred care transforms lives – often in the quiet, everyday ways that matter most.

Care Creates… Steps to Independence

“Before coming into care, one person spent their days in hospital under constant observation because they were considered a high risk of falling and could not walk unaided. In a supportive, homely care environment, they were given the time and encouragement to rebuild their strength. Today, they walk independently – and even dance. Good care creates the chance not just to recover, but to truly thrive.”

–  Kirsty Cartin, Care Home Manager, Rashielee Care Home

Care Creates… Safe, Joyful Homes

“We feel he is safe and cared for with dignity and fun too. The staff are all so friendly and caring which gives it a homely and positive feel when visiting.”

–  Friend of a resident, Bayview Care Home, Meallmore

Care Creates… Confidence Restored

“Dad has recently been receiving home care assistance with morning routine and evening mealtime, which has been going extremely well.

As a family we thought he may object to the help as he has been a relatively independent individual, however after a few falls his confidence has deteriorated.

As a family, we could not have wished for a better outcome, thank you so much Bluebird.”

– Lynda, daughter of a customer at Bluebird Care

Care Creates… A Life Given Back

“My mum Sheila thrived from the moment she moved into Carrondale. The staff didn’t just care for her – they truly knew her. After six months in hospital, she was withdraw and bedbound. On her first day, I left her briefly. When I returned, she wasn’t where I’d left her. I found her on the dance floor… smiling and dancing. I never thought I would see my mum like that again. Carrondale gave me my mum back – and memories we will cherish forever.”

–  Dave, son of Sheila – Carrondale Care Home

In loving memory of Sheila.

Why These Stories Matter

The Care Creates campaign is built on real voices, lived experiences and everyday snapshots that show Scotland what social care truly is – not a crisis service, but a pillar of our national wellbeing.

These stories demonstrate:

  • Independence supported through compassionate rehabilitation
  • Dignity upheld in every interaction
  • Connection & joy at the centre of daily life
  • Confidence & trust rebuilt through consistent support
  • Family reassurance as a fundamental outcome of good care

They help reframe social care as something universal: a shared social good that benefits all of us.
