Care Creates: Care that Cares for the People & Planet Manifesto Key Asks

Care Creates… A greener sector for healthier communities and a stronger planet.

Scottish Care is calling for a social care system that cares for people and the planet.

Embracing sustainability is essential to ensuring future care can thrive. By responding proactively to climate change, social care can support the wellbeing of people who access care, the workforce who deliver it, and the communities they serve – while contributing to Scotland’s transition to a lowcarbon economy.

By embedding sustainability in care, we nurture both people and the environment – ensuring a thriving future for all

Our manifesto asks include:

  • Ringfenced funding for climaterelated projects within the social care sector.
  • A sustainability strategy for all care providers, focused on reducing carbon emissions and environmental impact.
  • Inclusion of social care providers in local resilience planning, recognising their critical role during climaterelated disruption.
  • Upgrading care facilities with energyefficient infrastructure, including improved insulation, renewable energy and lowemission transport options.
  • Training and support for care staff on sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.
  • Embedding environmental sustainability criteria in commissioning and procurement for social care services.
  • Regular monitoring and reporting on sustainability progress, aligned with Scotland’s netzero targets.
  • Engagement with people who access care, families and communities to promote participation in climatefriendly initiatives.
  • Collaboration across the sector to share best practice and maximise collective impact.

Care that truly supports wellbeing cannot ignore the climate crisis. Sustainable care is resilient care – and resilient care creates healthier people, stronger communities and a better future for our planet.
