Let’s Talk About Sex…… uality
A Round Table Discussion on Sexuality & Dementia
When:
Tuesday 25th July 09:30 – 11:30pm; Lunch & Networking from 11:30 – 12pm
Where: Terrence Higgins Trust Scotland, 3rd Floor, Breckenridge House, 274 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow G2 3EH.
Scottish Care, the Terrence Higgins Trust and Alzheimer Scotland held a Roundtable Discussion in late May to talk about the issues of sexuality as they affected individuals with dementia and older people in general.
Sexuality as defined by the World Health Organisation should be afforded to all adults; therefore people should not be discriminated against because of a dementia diagnosis.
The taboo of sexuality and ageing is challenging enough without considering what this may come to mean for someone living with dementia, their sexuality and their intimate relationships.
Our initial meeting brought together people with lived experience and professionals around the table to discuss some of the key issues to ensure that a holistic, person centred approach fully encompasses a person’s sexuality as an integral part of self.
Amongst some of the issues we explored were:
- How do we ensure that people with dementia are free to express their sexuality?
- How do we support and protect the sexual rights of people with dementia?
- What issues might interfere with positive sexual expression or interfere with the sexual rights of people with dementia?
- How do we support care staff to enable individuals with dementia to live their lives to the fullest sexual expression?
We are now holding a second roundtable to specifically focus on issues relating to supporting the workforce so that they might better enable individuals with dementia to live their lives to the full. This meeting has limited places but if you would like to come along and contribute to the discussion and learning then please email [email protected]
