Iriss – The View from Here – Experiences of the social services workforce

screen-shot-2016-09-16-at-11-08-22

Understanding, celebrating, sharing. Be part of it!

Iriss is working to raise the profile of the social services workforce by sharing practitioner experiences of working in care and support. We know that often, research about the social services workforce fails to reach those who work most closely with those supported by services, so we need your help to make sure that your voice is heard.

As part of this work known as The View from Here, we’re running a series of creative workshops that will use storytelling, songwriting and creative writing to gather frontline practitioner experiences of working in social services. This experiences will form part of a public multimedia exhibition.

ATTEND OUR CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP – 26th OCTOBER IN EDINBURGH

In the words of Allen Ginsberg, ‘Poetry is the one place where people can speak their original human mind. It is the outlet for people to say in public what is known in private.’

We would like to invite you to attend a free workshop specially designed to help you find, shape and share your voice through creative writing. This workshop will be delivered by Magi Gibson, a prizewinning writer and experienced creative writing tutor.

The short pieces created at this workshop will be shared online and as part of public exhibitions designed to help the public understand what a career in care is really like. If you choose to do so, you can share what you produce with colleagues and your employer. Some of the skills you pick up may be transferable to other work you’re involved in.

What do you need to bring?

Nothing! These workshops are designed for absolute beginners, so please don’t worry if you haven’t had any experience of working in this way. The greatest asset you can bring with you is your life experience and personality, that’s what we want this workshop to embrace! Please note that this workshop is specifically for FRONTLINE PRACTITIONERS.

Be part of it; be creative!

Scottish Care Workforce Development Strategy Group

The Workforce Development Strategy Group is an innovative, progressive group of Scottish Care members interested in all workforce related matters. The next Strategy Group event entitled ‘The Spirit Beyond the Letter’ will take place on Tuesday 1st November 11.00am – 4.00pm in Glasgow.

This is an important event to put in your diary.  On the 31st October the following requirements will come into effect:

  1. SSSC Fitness to Practise
  2. SSSC Codes of Practice
  3. Safer Recruitment Through Better Recruitment

We are delighted that members of the relevant SSSC departments will be attending to provide advice and support to members.  We are changing the format of this event to incorporate workshops on the topics above, as well as a session on recruitment and retention challenges and workforce physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

There will be a networking lunch where participants will be able to speak to fellow providers and team members from the SSSC and Care Inspectorate.

ALL Scottish Care members are very welcome to attend.  Invitations will be issued via Eventbrite but please contact Katharine Ross [email protected] directly if you would like to attend.

Voices from the Front Line of Nursing in Social Care

Voices from the Front Line of Nursing in Social Care

We have been inundated with requests to participate in the research project ‘Voices from the Front Line of Nursing: Exploring Recruitment and Retention of Nurses in the Social Care Sector’.  The response from providers has been fantastic and clearly demonstrates the importance and relevance of this study.

Throughout September, members of the Scottish Care team will be travelling across the country, interviewing nurses and asking them about their experiences of working in the social care sector.  We want to know what attracted them into the job, the challenges they face and what makes them want to stay……or leave.  A report of the findings of the research will written and launched at the Scottish Care Home Conference on the 18th November.

We are sorry that we have not been able to visit all the organisation who expressed interest in participating in this research.  We are however holding a Nursing Recruitment and Retention Seminar on Tuesday 6th December, to which all organisations interested in progressing the findings of our report will be invited. The venue and time for this meeting has yet to be confirmed but more information will be shared on our website over the coming weeks.

Palliative and end of life care workforce survey NES SSSC

Palliative and end of life care workforce survey NES SSSC

Dear colleagues

As part of the Strategic Framework for Action for Palliative and End of Life Care, NHS Education for Scotland (NES) and the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) were asked to develop an education and development framework.

With the integration of health and social care we have a shared commitment to the learning and development of the diverse workforce across the public, third and independent sector. This survey is one part of a learning needs assessment across the workforce. We are also gathering valuable information through focus groups and staff engagement about existing skills and knowledge in the workforce, the extent and value of current learning opportunities and the opportunities for collaborative working and learning.

We would be grateful if you could disseminate this survey widely across your organisation and networks to all workers in health and social care, including specialist and generalist, clinical and non-clinical, who may be involved or come in contact with people with palliative care needs, their families and carers.

The survey can be accessed by following this link https://response.questback.com/nhseducationforscotland/cmzphjqbap

Alternative ways to access the survey are provided in the attached poster which can be displayed on staff notice boards, newsletters and in your staff communications.

This survey will be open until the 19th October 2016.

Thank you for your support.

1. Planning for Your Future workshops

As people are able to choose their own retirement age and now have pension freedoms, we find there is a lot of uncertainty amongst people who are at the age of deciding when it is right for them to consider leaving full time employment. These freedoms also make succession planning more difficult for organisations who are unsure when their skilled people might decide to leave. Many people take this huge step unprepared and find that after a few months they are really struggling to come to terms with the changes their decision has brought.

Our Planning for Your Future workshops help people address this major decision and give them the tools they need to start planning. The workshop is one full day and is a unique opportunity for people to spend time with an Independent Financial Adviser, a Solicitor, a health professional and a careers advisor. The sessions are interactive with several group discussions to start people thinking about and planning for their future. Here is a sample of the topics we discuss:

· Coping with the changes that retirement bring to all aspects of life
· Can you afford to fund the lifestyle you want in retirement?
· How are you going to spend the 40+ extra free hours each week – both in summer and winter?
· Power of Attorney and wills – are you aware of the importance?
· Ways to keep socially and physically active once you leave your work colleagues behind
· If you are thinking about finding alternative employment – part-time, flexi, starting your own business or even volunteering, what does the job market look like in 2016, what are employers looking for and what are your routes to market?

Many people tell us they feel empowered to discuss their future with their employers following a workshop so it can open up lines of communication that were possibly inaccessible beforehand. If you would like to make this workshop available to your people, please give me a call.

Cost of workshop – £190 plus vat per delegate

Next workshops – Edinburgh 4th Oct, 7th Nov Glasgow 11th Oct, 15th Nov Dundee Oct TBC

How to book: By email: [email protected] or 0333 323 2400 or online – http://nowandnext.scot/workshops/one-day-workshops/

2. Early Stage Dementia awareness (delivered in-house to a group of 10 minimum)

Dementia is a workplace issue.
Around 90,000 people in Scotland live with dementia, a number that will double in the next 25 years. As changes to retirement and state pension rules make working beyond age 65 common more people will experience early symptoms of dementia while in employment. Many workers are also unpaid carers for someone who has dementia. And a growing number of people who use your organisation’s products and services will be affected by dementia, directly or as a dementia carer.

We run two in-house half day sessions and also open sessions for individuals to attend:

Becoming a dementia aware workplace: (For an employee group at your premises)
· Half day: Suitable for all staff. Participants will learn about:
· Dementia; what it is, and why it’s relevant to the workplace
· The symptoms of dementia and how it can progress
· Communication with someone who is living with dementia: whether customer or employee
· The risk factors for dementia and how risks can be reduced

Dementia, law and workplace good practice: (For an employee group at your premises)
· Half day: Suitable for managers and those in HR roles. Participants will learn about:
· Employers’ legal obligations when someone has dementia, or is a carer from someone who is living with dementia
· Ways in which someone with dementia, or who is a dementia carer, may be supported to continue in employment
· Support available to employers and employees around dementia

For further information on our dementia awareness sessions including pricing please follow this link – Dementia Awareness Training

3. Open Workshop on Dementia, the Law and Workplace Good Practice (for individuals)

Where: Age Scotland, 160 Causewayside, Edinburgh, EH9 1PR
When: Wednesday 5 October: 10am-1pm.
Who: Suitable for staff with a personnel and/or people management role

How to book: By email: [email protected] or 0333 323 2400

Cost of workshop – £60 plus vat per person

4. Age Awareness in the workplace

Current projections suggest that the population of Scotland will rise to 5.7 million by 2039, and that the population will age significantly, with the number of people aged 65 and over increasing by 53% between 2014 and 2039. As people will increasingly be in a position where they have to work for longer, the way older workers are treated in the workplace will have increasing significance.

Our half day training session aims to:

• Consider best practice and make the most of your older workforce.
• ensure everyone in your workforce engages with and appreciates older colleagues and customers appropriately.
• ensure your organisation is age aware in compliance with current legislation – Equalities Act 2010.
• perhaps rethink/refresh your policy on older employees.
• Highlight how commonly discrimination and prejudices are experienced by older people and suggest ways to address these in the workplace.

Cost of workshop – £50 plus vat per person

How to book: By email: [email protected] or 0333 323 2400

Take part in Scottish Care nursing research

Recruitment and retention difficulties have reached a critical point within the nursing home and the social care nursing sector.  Why do nurses come into the sector and what makes them stay?

Throughout August and September, Scottish Care would like to speak to front line nurses about both their experiences and perceptions of the nursing home/social care nursing sector.

We want to explore in more detail the qualities and skills front line nurses need and what we can do to improve the profile of this difficult, demanding and rewarding job.   We also want to find out what motivates them in their day-to-day activities.

The intention is to create a resource of stories that can be used to help organisations shape their approach in areas such as recruitment and retention or workforce engagement.

Scottish Care will use the findings of this work to explore how we can attract more nurses to work in nursing homes and social care nursing – and how we can encourage them to stay.

We have therefore contacted ALL members of Scottish Care, and especially those who have been engaged recently through the Front Line Support Worker Strategy Forum and the Scottish Care Workforce Development Strategy Group to let you know about our latest initiative designed to help address the pressing issues around recruitment and retention of nurses in our sector.

Scottish Care would like to carry out interviews for roughly half an hour (by phone or in person) with people working in front line nursing posts in a variety of care home, care at home or housing support settings. We are keen to establish a national picture and take into account small and large providers including all volunteers but this depends on how many come forward. If you are not selected the research will, of course, still be available to you.

The study will take place between now and the end of September, with findings presented at the Scottish Care Annual Care Home and Conference Awards event on Friday 18th November 2016  at the Hilton Hotel, Glasgow.

If you are:

  • A qualified nurse interested in taking part in the study and can provide an appropriate management contact in your organisation

  • An employer/manager wishing to get your organisation involved and think you have nurses willing to be interviewed.

Then please contact  Katharine Ross noting your interest before Friday 19th August 2016 at the email address below or by phone.

Identifying skills issues for the social service workforce

Help the SSSC understand the current and future skills issues for the social service workforce by taking part in a short survey.

Your views will help the workforce regulatory body examine skills supply and demand in Scottish social services and contribute to their Workforce Skills Report. It will also help the SSSC to understand the skills needed to deliver new services.

Do you know…

  • what the causes of skills shortages are in the social service sector?
  • what the causes of skills gaps are in the social service sector?
  • if your organisation has a plan in place to address skills gaps and skills shortages for care staff?

Tell them…

  • how difficult it is to recruit people with the right capabilities and skills
  • if there is there a gap between the skills your workforce has and the skills they need to carry out the role
  • what your workplace is doing to tackle skills issues.

The SSSC want to hear from anyone working in social services including frontline workers, managers and training managers.

Take the survey here

The results will be published in 2017-18 and will be shared with key stakeholders including Scottish Government, employers and learning providers.

The closing date for responses is 29 July 2016.
