What is a care technologist?

A care technologist works with people to find out what is important to them.

They help people to think about challenges in life and explore what goals they would like to achieve. Then they find digital solutions to support them to achieve those goals.

Someone’s goals could be to:

  • enjoy more independence
  • get more connected to loved ones
  • feel safer at home
  • have a fulfilling and enjoyable day

People who work as care technologists find they have:

  • a passion for working with people
  • enthusiasm and curiosity about how technology can support people
  • good problem solving skills and ability to think of new ideas

Care technologists can work with many different technologies. But they always use a person-led approach. This ensures they find collaborative solutions tailored to a person’s needs.

Who do care technologists work with?

As a care technologist you will work with:

  • care and service providers
  • residential homes
  • individuals accessing care and support

Care technologists get to know people and are aware of technology that could suit them. They can then create a digital care plan.

Sometimes plans can include quite simple suggestions that can have a big impact.

For example:

  • a simple change to a phone to help people keep in touch with loved ones
  • a voice activated device to draw curtains to help people stay independent in their own home

How to become a care technologist

Care technologist is quite a new role in the care sector. There are no formal qualifications or career paths into the role.

You might want to become a care technologist if:

  • you work in the care sector and want to find the next step in your career
  • you work in the care sector and already find yourself using technology to support your service users
  • you are considering a career in the care sector but are not sure if more established roles are for you
  • you work in the tech sector and want a role where your experience can deliver direct benefits to individuals and the wider community

If you already work in the care sector, you might want to speak to your manager or about opportunities for care technologist roles.

Some care providers will have similar roles with different names. For example, a job search might include ‘digital care worker’ or ‘digital care support worker’.
